iPad Pre-Ordering Begins Tomorrow: Important Details Confirmed

UPDATE (03/12/10): Although the iPad is now available for pre-order, many readers are still unclear on some of the details found below. If you're vague on any of the details regarding pre-ordering, we suggest reviewing the Q&A below.

The long-awaited opportunity to pre-order the Apple iPad starts tomorrow. Although Apple announced over a week ago that iPad pre-ordering would begin on March 12th, 2010, Apple has been otherwise vague in the details they've volunteered. For those of you that plan to pre-order tomorrow, those details are likely very important.

What Apple did tell everyone in their press release was when the iPad would be available for pre-order on the 12th, and that both versions of the iPad (WiFi only and WiFi+3G) would be available for pre-order at that time. Following are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding pre-ordering of the Apple iPad which Apple's press release, and other iPad information, failed to make clear.

What time on March 12th does pre-ordering begin?

Apple Media/PR Team has confirmed that iPad pre-ordering will be available as of 5:30 AM PDT (8:30 AM EDT).

Will my pre-ordered iPad arrive or ship on April 3rd?

Apple made a considerable effort to get the iPhone 3GS in the hands of pre-order customers on release day. It is likely that Apple intended to get all of the pre-ordered 3GS units in hands on release day, but were surprised by the volume and thus some pre-order customers received their phones well after release.

Apple Already Working on Video Conferencing for iPad

Apple released iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 4 yesterday, and developers sunk their teeth right in to determine what new features or hints of coming features might be lurking in the codebase. What a number of developers turned up, within hours of the SDK's release, surprised many. There is a good deal of evidence contained within the SDK to indicate that Apple is either currently developing, or already prepared for, video conferencing via a front-facing camera in the iPad.

MacRumors reported today that developers who dug around in the newly released SDK turned up the following variables related to camera support in the iPad

iPad Likely to Launch with Missing Apps

There have been suspicions floating around since the Apple keynote address introducing the iPad about whether or not the iPad will be "missing" key iPhone applications such as stocks, weather, and more. These suspicions were a direct result of the images of the iPad shown during the keynote (and subsequently on Apple's iPad gallery pages) depicting a limited set of applications on the iPad. Users around the web, including here in our iPad forums wondered whether the missing apps would fail to make it onto the iPad for launch. However unlikely it seemed at the time, it is seeming ever more likely now.

Wired.com's Brian X. took note recently that Apple's iPad press release specifically states that "12 new innovative apps designed especially for the iPad". A simple look at the image Apple has provided of the iPad's home screen (shown above) reveals

First iPad Commercial Debuts at Oscars

In typical Apple (AAPL) form, Jobs & Co. took advantage of the 2010 Oscars to unveil the first iPad television commercial. Apple has aired iPhone commercials during the Oscars at the past, and has debuted products using high-profile television spots before. Many bloggers had predicted an iPad spot during the Oscars.

The television spot was relatively simple, running only 30-seconds and featuring a barrage of

iPad Release and Pre-Order Dates Announced

Finally all the speculation and rumors about delays, release dates, and pre-order scenarios can be put to rest. Today, Apple announced release date information for the WiFi only iPad models as well as pre-order dates for both the WiFi and WiFi + 3G iPad models. Though the iPad is hitting shelves a week or so later than anticipated, the announcement puts to rest concerns about major delays and supply shortages that originated from analyst rumors circulated earlier this week.

iPad Production Delays in Second Report

Just this week analyst Peter MIsek made waves when he announced that production bottlenecks could limit or delay the iPad release later this month. Now a second report by Think Equity analyst Vijay Rakesh confirms Taiwanese manufacturers have encountered minor issues that could set back Apple's plans.

The issues are said to be temporary and have stalled increases in production that were expected in February. As a result, there may be only 200-250K iPads ready for launch. Rakesh explains that future monthly production will hit at least 800K units starting in April.

AT&T CEO: iPad is a Wi-Fi Driven Product

In comments this week, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he expects most people to use the iPad on Wi-Fi networks. The exclusive provider of 3G service to Apple's revolutionary new tablet computer just isn't expecting a lot of subscriptions to the data plan.

Stephenson explained in an investor conference, "my expectation is that there's not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription." The subscription he's referring to is a $30 monthly unlimited data plan for 3G iPads. A limited plan (250 MB) is also available for $15 a month.

iPad Release Date March 26th "Rumored"

Just one day after one analyst with a poor track record initiated grumblings about iPad production issues leading to supply shortages, a number of outlets are reporting rumors about the iPad release date. Countless blogs and news sites have been reporting "leaked information" that suggests the iPad is coming to stores on March 26th.

The most surprising thing about this "revelation" is why it is causing such a stir. March 26th simply lines up with the original release Steve Jobs indicated during the iPad announcement and is the iPad release date that we here at The iPad Guide along with

Will the iPad Launch Be Delayed?

Anyone experienced with following the buzz surrounding most gadgets, and especially Apple gadgets knows that analyst predictions often drum up a lot of attention. More often than not, these analyst predictions turn out to be off-base, but from time to time they're accurate. The latest analyst prediction from Canaccord Adam's Peter Misek warns investors that the upcoming launch/release of the Apple iPad may be limited to the US or possibly delayed up to a month.

In a letter written to investors issued Monday, Misek wrote "the upcoming iPad launch may be somewhat limited as a manufacturing bottleneck has impacted production of Apple's newest device. An unspecified production problem at the iPad's manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision, will likely limit the launch region to the US and the number of units available to roughly
