Australian Airline to Give Passengers iPads In-Flight

The Australian airline Qantas already provides an iPhone app for frequent flyers. Now the company is taking things further by offering all passengers in-flight entertainment on the iPad. A new app called QStreaming will launch initially on board the B767 fleet, along with iPads for each passenger to use while in the air.

Qantas plans to equip all of its planes with iPads not only for passengers, but for pilots as well. The FAA recently approved the use of iPads in the cockpit to replace bulky paper maps. The company also announced it will be ditching BlackBerry for the iPhone, moving all of its mobile devices to Apple iOS.

Avengers Blu-ray Gets iPad Companion App

Marvel Studios plans to release an Avengers companion app for iOS devices later this month. The Avengers Initiative: A Marvel Second Screen App for the iPad will feature character bios, exclusive photos, interactive comics, video content, and more. The app will be updated on a bi-weekly basis until the movie is released to DVD and Blu-ray on September 25, 2012.

Google+ for the iPad Unveiled at Google I/O

Google has made a lot of big announcements at its Google I/O 2012 keynote currently being held in San Francisco, California. Some of the highlights include: The new Nexus 7 tablet with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), a cool looking media streaming sphere called the Nexus Q, and the pricey Project Glass ($1,500). Google also announced that Google+ is getting a tablet makeover.

The app has been optimized for Android tablets and the iPad. Google+ now features a new navigation system, Hangout video chats, and easily-tappable actions like +1 and comment. The app will also take full advantage of the new iPad's Retina display. Android users get the update today, while iPad users will have to wait a little longer.

Reading Rainbow Finds New Life on the iPad

The canceled PBS television show Reading Rainbow is back thanks to the iPad. Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton told Engadget that he decided to re-imagine the show as an iPad app after the public outcry over its cancellation.

Children can choose between four themed islands to discover new books and videos customized to their age and interests. Users are also rewarded with digital stickers for frequent reading and performing other tasks. The app currently includes 150 books and 16 video field trips with more to be added later.

SlideWriter iPad App Tries to Recreate Popular Jailbreak Tweak

SwipeSelection, based on Daniel Hooper's concept video, is one of the best jailbreak tweaks released this year. The tweak makes editing text on the iPad and iPhone much easier by allowing users to swipe instead of tapping for a more precise cursor drag.

Studio Tentpole has attempted to recreate Kyle Howells’ jailbreak tweak with a new iPad app called SlideWriter. The $0.99 app allows users to swipe above the keyboard, instead of on the keyboard, to edit text. However, Christian Zibreg of iDownloadblog says the app isn't as good as Howells' version.

InboundWriter Content Optimization Application Coming to the iPad

The web-based text editor InboundWriter is being converted to HTML5 to make it iPad accessible. Jay McCarthy, VP of Marketing at InboundWriter told Cult of Mac that iPad users have been asking for an iPad friendly version of the application. InboundWriter is currently running on Flash, which makes it unavailable on Apple's tablet.

“The people asking for it have gotten louder and louder,” Jay McCarthy said over the phone. “We were very, very close to making the decision to dump IE altogether, because of their lack of HTML5 support."

New iPad App Takes You Back to Wolf Creek

Sharp Agency in collaboration with Emu Creek Pictures has announced what they're calling the "world’s first interactive Horror iBook" entitled Return to Wolf Creek.

The iBook takes readers on a spine-chilling journey back to Wolf Creek with never-before-seen deleted scenes, a 45 minute documentary (The Making of Wolf Creek), interviews and more. The iBook was designed to help fans get reacquainted with the 2005 horror film. New fans will also enjoy learning about the original film before Wolf Creek 2 hits theaters in 2013.

Clock App Coming to iPad With iOS 6

iPad users rejoice! The native Clock application comes your way with iOS 6 this fall. AppleInsider has pictures of the upcoming addition to your home screen. iPad 2 and new iPad (iPad 3) devices will be supported by iOS 6.

The Clock app has several enhancements for the larger iPad screen over the iPhone app. Features include World Clock, Alarm, Stopwatch and Timer functions. The World Clock, pictured above, also displays weather information for cities of interest.

Free iPad Games: Survival Run with Bear Grylls

Man vs. Wild fans can reconnect with reality TV star Bear Grylls thanks to his new iPad app Survival Run.

Grylls is known for recreating survival scenarios on his popular Discovery Channel TV show. He was let go by the newtwork in March of 2012 after "a continuing contractual dispute." The British TV adventurer also became a popular internet meme after drinking his own urine in 2010.

The new universal iOS app from F84 Games allows users to control Grylls as he is being chased by a relentless grizzly bear. Users must swipe left, right, down or up to avoid random obstacles as they run away from the wild beast. Man vs. Wild fans will enjoy the many Grylls sound bytes included in the game.

There are also seven Bear Grylls characters to unlock, rescue choppers, power paragliders, jetpacks and so on. The game features "high quality 3D graphics", Game Center support, and promises future updates.

Sparrow Working on iPad Application

The popular Mac/iPhone email client Sparrow released a teaser page for their upcoming iPad application. The page promises that Sparrow is "preparing something bigger" and allows Sparrow fans to sign up for future email alerts about the project.

iOS Mail Client

The Sparrow iPhone app was released in March 2012. It features full IMAP support for Gmail, Google Apps, iCloud, Yahoo, AOL, Mobile Me and custom accounts. The iPhone version is available in the iTunes App Store for $3. Pricing and features for the iPad app are unknown at this time.
