Barnes and Noble Teams Up with Samsung to Release the Galaxy 4 Nook

This is normally a quiet time of year for smartphone/tablet manufacturers as the world waits for Apple's newest iPhone and iPad to be released, but Samsung and HTC have decided not to sit ideally by this September. Samsung recently announced that its iPhone 5s lookalike the Galaxy Alpha will launch around the same time as the iPhone 6, and HTC has scheduled a press conference a few days before Apple's rumored September 9th iPhone event. Samsung has also teamed up with Barnes & Noble to release the Galaxy 4 Nook.

The e-reader/tablet is basically just a Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 with dedicated Barnes & Noble widgets. The new Nook is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and it runs Google's Android operating system. It is equipped with a 1280 x 800 (216 PPI) display, front- and rear facing cameras and it ships with 8GB of internal memory plus a microSD slot for up to 32GB of expandable memory.

Barnes & Nobles Launches Nook App for iOS Devices

After discounting its Nook Simple Touch to $99, Barnes & Noble launched its new Nook Video app for iOS devices. The app allows users to rent or buy movies and TV shows directly from Barnes and Noble's streaming service, without the need of a subscription. Nook Video also supports UltraViolet movies for users who want to access their digital collections.

The Nook Simple Touch sale and new video app comes after the surprise resignation of Barnes & Noble CEO William Lynch, and a 34% drop in revenue due to poor Nook tablet sales. In June, the book retailer announced it would stop making tablets itself, and would start using an unnamed third party to manufacture black-and-white Barnes & Noble-branded e-readers.

Netflix Promises New iPad App in a Few Weeks

Netflix rolled out an improved Android app today, and promised iPad owners would be getting the same “new tablet experience" in a few weeks. The app's release coincides with the launch of the Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet. The new app aims to offer a better experience while browsing and selecting movies. The movies will feature larger artwork making it easier to swipe through using the iPad's touch screen interface.

Neil Hunt, chief product officer at Netflix, said "the new Netflix interface offers a significant improvement in browsing and searching for TV shows and movies to instantly watch."
