Parts Shortages Reduce iPad 2 Shipping Forecasts

Shipping times for the iPad 2 are down to 1-2 weeks on the Apple Store online. This may better than 4-6 weeks for consumers, however the extended delays experienced since the iPad 2 was launched have caused analysts to reduce their Apple sales forecasts. IHS iSuppli now expects Apple to deliver 39.7 million units including all iPad models in 2011.

iPad 2 short supply

Their previous estimate was over nine percent higher at 43.7 million units. Other analysts aren't as optimistic. JPMorgan and Merrill Lynch both reduced their annual estimates slightly however the forecasts are much lower, coming in at 27.3 million and 26.4 million units respectively.

iPad 2 Availability Limited as Demand Soars

Apple is having a hard time keeping the iPad 2 in stock as lines continue to form outside of retail stores and shipping times for online orders are pushed back. Some Apple stores received additional shipments this morning, only to have them sell out in a matter of hours.

Shipping times for online orders of the iPad 2 on the Apple website have been extended to 4-5 weeks. In contrast, accessories such as the Digital AV Adapter and some colors of the Smart Cover ship in three days or less. Apple originally estimated shipping times of 3-5 days, however within hours of the launch on March 11 the company had revised times to 2-3 weeks.

Apple iPad 2 event launch iOS 4.3 features

Of course, this is not outside the realm of possibility. In 2010 the original iPad was already old news by the time February came, and Apple is intent on releasing an update to its tablet to stave off the competition. January was completely overshadowed by another Apple product, the Verizon iPhone 4.

It's safe to say Digg founder Kevin Rose has a few contacts in the tech industry. One reliable source tells him the iPad 2 will be revealed by Apple in the next three to four weeks. A special iPad 2 event may even take place on Tuesday, February 1, 2011.
