Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV on September 9, 2015. The Apple TV 4 is a significant upgrade from the third-generation and includes many new features not found on its predecessor. For starters the fourth-generation is pricier starting at $149 for the 32GB model, and $199 for the 64GB model. The third-generation TV, which is still available for purchase, is only $69. HBO's deal with Apple to release its new online subscription service only on Apple devices is not permanent, according to IGN. An HBO spokesperson told the entertainment website that the deal with "Apple begins in April and will last for three months". This means HBO will eventually be free to launch the HBO Now app on other streaming devices like Roku or the PlayStation 4.

Apple today announced at its Spring Forward event in San Francisco, California that HBO's new subscription service will launch exclusively on Apple TV and the App Store in April. The streaming service called HBO Now will be available for $14.99 a month with no cable subscription required. Subscribers will be able to access past, present and future HBO programming through their Apple TV digital media player or via the HBO app on their iPad or iPhone. The first month of HBO Now will be free to customers who sign up at launch.

HBO is preparing to put another nail in the cable television coffin by partnering with Apple and other companies such as Roku to launch its new subscription based streaming service in April, according to the International Business Times. HBO wants to launch the standalone service called "HBO Now" in "conjunction with the the premiere of the fifth season of Game of Thrones".
The new service will allow customers to subscribe to HBO directly instead of paying high fees for bundled channels from cable or satellite providers such as Comcast or Verizon. The cost of an HBO Now subscription will be around $15 a month when purchased directly from HBO. The company hopes to offer an HBO Now app on third-party distribution services such as Apple TV, Roku, PlayStation and more, just like it does now with its HBO Go service for current customers.
